Database Management Basics
Database management is a system of managing the information that supports a company’s business operations. It involves storing and distributing data it to applications and users and editing it when needed as well as monitoring changes in data and protecting against data corruption due to unexpected failure. It is a part of a company’s informational infrastructure that aids in decision-making, corporate growth and compliance with laws such as the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.
In the 1960s, Charles Bachman and IBM among others came up with the first database systems. They evolved into information management systems (IMS), which allowed large amounts data to be stored and retrieved for a variety of purposes. A database is a set of tables which organize data in accordance with the specific scheme, for example one-to many relationships. It makes use of primary keys to identify records and permit cross-references between tables. Each table contains a number of fields, referred to as attributes, which provide information about the data entities. The most widely used type of database currently is a relational model developed by E. F. « Ted » Codd at IBM in the 1970s. This design is based on normalizing the data, making it simpler to use. The majority of DBMSs are able to support multiple types of databases through different levels of internal and external organization. The internal level deals with cost, scalability and other operational issues such as the layout of the database’s physical storage. The external level is the representation of the database on user interfaces and applications. It could comprise a combination of different external views (based on the different data models) and may also include virtual tables that are constructed using generic data to improve performance.
