Database Management Basics
Database management is the process for managing information that supports an organization’s business operations. It involves storing and distributing data it to users and applications, editing it as needed and monitoring changes to data and making sure that data integrity is not compromised due to unexpected failure. It is one component of an organization’s overall informational infrastructure, which supports decision-making and growth for the business as well as compliance with laws like the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.
The first database systems were created in the 1960s by Charles Bachman, IBM and others. They evolved into information management systems (IMS) that allowed the storage and retrieve massive amounts of data for a wide range of applications, from the almustaqbalaluminium.ae calculation of inventory to supporting complex human resources and financial accounting functions.
A database is tables that arrange data in accordance with a specific scheme, such as one-to-many relationships. It uses primary key to identify records, and also allows cross-references among tables. Each table contains a set of fields called attributes which provide information about data entities. The most well-known type of database today is a relational model, created by E. F. « Ted » Codd at IBM in the 1970s. This model is based on normalizing the data, making it more easy to use. It is also easier to update data because it doesn’t require changing many sections of the databases.
Most DBMSs can accommodate multiple database types by providing different levels of internal and external organization. The internal level deals with costs, scalability, and other operational issues such as the layout of the physical storage. The external level is the way the database appears in user interfaces and other applications. It could include a mix of various external views (based on the various data models) and can also include virtual tables that are constructed using generic data to improve performance.
